Works on the Papendrechtsebrug

During the renovation of the Papendrechtsebrug, various lifting operations were carried out using the floating sheerlegs Matador, Matador 2 and Matador 3.

The Matador 3 was used to tilt the new bridge deck. The bridge deck has a roadway length of 33.3 metres, a total length of nearly 50 metres including the ballast tank, and a weight of approximately 700 tonnes. The bridge deck was lifted from SPMTs and carefully raised into a vertical position. The structure was then rotated while suspended from a single lifting hook and precisely lowered back into a horizontal position.

The Matador safely lifted the bridge’s control cabin and placed it onto a pontoon.

The Matador 2 was deployed for the demolition works. First, the basement roof was removed, after which the quadrant rack was lifted out of the bascule chamber. The rack formed part of the lifting mechanism used to operate the bridge leaf. By cutting the rack loose and lifting it out of the chamber as a single unit, it could be transported directly for demolition.

The use of the various floating sheerlegs enabled several components of the Papendrechtsebrug to be safely and carefully removed, relocated and installed as part of the renovation.
